A breakfast smoothie can be packed with so many amazing healthy foods including protein and fats. This Acai smoothie is a far cry from the over-sweet fruit smoothies that are usually sold in the shops. In my opinion it is one of the best ways to start the day and means that you have ticked all the healthy feeding boxes before eight o’clock in the morning! This Acai blueberry smoothie for kids is beautifully sweet and creamy. It contains kale, banana, almond milk, chia seeds and vanilla, so a great combination of fruit, vegetable, beneficial fat and protein – all in one glass!

Acai berries (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) are dark purple coloured fruit from Brazil, which is similar in shape to a grape. Acai powder is becoming very popular among the healthy eating community as is contains a very high concentration of anti-oxidants which help our cells to thrive and renew. Since many of my little clients show high levels of oxidative stress in their lab testing (high need for anti-oxidants), I often recommend Acai. It tastes delicious when combined with other berries or with chocolate. It is also rich in calcium, vitamin A and iron.

It is thought that blueberries can keep your brain active for longer. Dr Jeremy Spencer of Reading University has written a study that finds that eating blueberries at breakfast can help your brain keep active, even in the afternoon. The children at my kids school get given blueberry every day during exam week, so the affect of blueberries on the brain is certainly catching on.
